California Notary Fees

Maximum California notary fees are governed by the Secretary of State. Individual notaries may also charge additional fees to cover travel, parking, the printing of documents, waiting for clients to show up, and other legitimate job-related expenses. Mobile notary fees vary.

$15/notarial act (e.g., signature notarization on acknowledgement or jurat). For example, if two people are signing the same document, the fee is $30.

ID Requirements

Every person requesting notarization of their signature must have a valid, unexpired photo identification. The most common forms of ID are:

  1. Driver's license and passport

  2. Military ID are acceptable, but they must contain the photo and signature of the person*.

  3. If you do not have a valid, unexpired ID, you may bring two people with you who have a valid ID who can sign a statement confirming your identity.

  4. A Canadian or Mexican driver’s license issued by an appropriate public agency*

  5. An employee ID issued by an agency or office of the state of California or a California city, county, or city and county

  6. An identification card issued by a federally-recognized tribal government*

  7. A valid foreign passport from the applicant’s country of citizenship*

All of the identification documents listed above must be current or issued within the past 5 years in order to be accepted by California Notaries. IDs listed above marked with an asterisk (*) must also contain an identifying number and the photograph, signature and physical description of the bearer.
